Lucent Gets More Verizon Wireless Business

Vendor to Supply cdma2000 1xEV-DO Revision A Gear

While hardly surprising, Lucent’s announcement that Verizon Wireless will use its gear to upgrade its CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Rev. A capabilities, indicates that the huge wireless carrier is continuing apace in its plans to upgrade its nationwide network to higher speed broadband capabilities.

The deal calls for Lucent to supply “incremental hardware and software upgrades to Verizon Wireless’ existing Lucent- supplied base stations” – thus the reason it’s hardly surprising news. These upgrades will let Verizon Wireless introduce a range of new services that include push-to-talk, messaging and VoIP.

Also not surprising: financial details are not being disclosed.

EV-DO Rev. A is considered by most mobile providers as their entry into broadband with download speeds up to 3.1 Mbps and uploads at 1.8 Mbps. It’s primarily important for VoIP services.
