IP Backhaul: Getting More for Less
A Co-Located Conference at CTIA Wireless 2009

How can the wireless operator add additional capacity at their cell site while reducing costs? Join us on April 1, 2009 as Telecommunications gives you access to panels of industry experts that will explore the technologies and tradeoffs for deploying next-gen IP/Ethernet wireline and microwave backhaul solutions.

Session I: Synchronization Keeps Ethernet Backhaul on Time

To resolve network synchronization issues, wireless operators and the Ethernet and synchronization vendors that serve them are converging on various options:

  • Hybrid Networks - wireless operators build a network of TDM for voice and IP for data.
  • Pseudowires - allow the wireless provider to run TDM and IP traffic in its native form on a common transport network.

You'll get to hear industry experts talk about synchronization options for IP/Ethernet, emerging ITU and IEEE standards and how wireless operators can incorporate synchronization into their next-gen backhaul networks.

Session II: IP/Ethernet Backhaul Migration Strategies

As they move to LTE and WiMAX, the issue is not "if" wireless operators will move to an all-IP Radio Access Network (RAN), but when. Issues include:

  • Common IP/MPLS Infrastructure - leveraging across the core, aggregation, and backhaul networks.
  • Emerging Standards for Ethernet backhaul - efforts headed by the Metro Ethernet Forum and the IP/MPLS will create standardized methods to build an Ethernet-based backhaul network.

In this panel, a group of industry experts will address how wireless operators can leverage these emerging standards efforts, solutions and potential operator adoption timelines.

Session III: Weighing Microwave Options for Wireless-Based Backhaul

Independent studies show that more than 50% of worldwide wireless backhaul networks are based on microwave technology. A survey of the trends will include:

  • IP and Ethernet Microwave Platforms - vendors continue to build these technologies into their respective platforms.
  • Business Opportunities for Microwave - where adding T1/E1 copper facilities is not cost effective, new opportunities emerge for traditional microwave, satellite, and even WiMAX.

In this panel, you'll get to hear from industry experts weighing these wireless backhaul options and how they can be incorporated into a wireless operator's overall strategy.
